How to Avoid a Bad First House Move

People often choose to relocate when they retire. Unfortunately, they sometimes make the wrong choice the first time, and then they have to relocate again. Here are some tips on how to avoid a bad first move.

Bad Move: Unhappy spouse

How it can happen: One person is interested in outdoor sports and the other cares more about visits from grandchildren

How it can be avoided: Find a retirement locale that makes both of you happy

Bad Move: Not enough interest

How it can happen: You move to a community that does not have an organization or activity that is important to you

How it can be avoided: List your retirement interests, including leisure activities, volunteer opportunities, churches and clubs, community services, cultural activities, adult education classes, etc. Make sure the community you are considering meets those needs

Bad Move: Unseasonable

How it can happen: A community to which you were attracted during a vacation turns out to be unappealing at other times of the year

How it can be avoided: Visit during the off-season, or consider renting before making commitment

Bad Move: Overgrown

How it can happen: A few years after you move, intensive development has spoiled your lifestyle

How it can be avoided: Find out how fast the community is growing and how it might change
